Thank You

I just finished reading Caputo's book, A Rumor of War for my masters class on the Vietnam War. Thank you for your bravery and for your courage. You give all Americans hope in this time of war. By being such a great man and friend, you have lived forever.

We'll never forget you, Walt

Anyone who has read Phil Caputo's classic "A Rumor of War" will know that it is dedicated to Walt Levy; they'd gone through Basic School together and been close friends. Caputo describes the shock of getting the news of Walt's death when he (Caputo) was battalion ass't S-3 (staff officer). I knew Walt as the XO of Charlie Company, in which I served with him for nine months at Camp Pendleton before we sailed for Vietnam on August 8, 1965, landing in Danang on August 28, just a few weeks before Walt died in action while trying to save a wounded comrade. As his photo shows, he was a poster-image of a Marine officer, a "mustang" (former enlisted) who led from the front and was looked up to by all of us. He was an inspiration to all of us, and we never got over his loss so early after we landed. Walt's example of self-sacrifice under fire encouraged us to carry on and live up to his example: greater love hath no man, than to lay down his life for his brother. Semper fi, brother Walt, you'll always be in our hearts.

Norwich University Semper Fidelis Society Remembers

To the family and friends of Walter N Levy,
I want you to know his name and inspiration live on. As a graduate of Norwich University ('87) and a former member of the Semper Fidelis Society, Walter N Levy Chapter, Lieutenant Levy represented selfless dedication and IS an inspiration to many young men and women from Norwich University who aspire to lead Marines.
As post Sept 11 events unfold, our Marine Corps continues to step up to the challenge of protecting freedom and our way of life. No longer shunned and belittled by the citizens of this nation, the motto "Semper Fidelis" has never rang more true.
As I again pack my sea bag in preparation of yet another deployment I think of the bench mark set by Walter Levy. To you and those like you, Walter, thanks for your sacrifice and commitment. You have inspired and are certainly not forgotten!

Semper Fidelis,

RR Descheneaux
Major USMC
