Roommates
Doug arrived in the 497th in the fall of 1969 when I was half-way through my tour. He became my "hooch" (room) mate but, because of the uniqueness of our mission (the 497th TFS "Nite Owl" squadron was the only night-dedicated fighter squadron in the Air Force at that time) we didn't get to see each other too much and I never got to know him very well. What I do remember, however, was that he was a young, quiet, rather nice-looking guy and a good pilot. You had to be good to be a Nite Owl - the mission demanded it. In late October or early November I went on leave but before I left, Doug and I made plans to fly a mission together. We never got to do that however, as just a day or so before I returned, Doug and Joe Echanis, our next-door neightbor, went MIA. Doug and Joe were the first Nite Owls to be lost in quite some time. My room was never quite the same without him.
