Final Mission of PFC Warren L. Beacham

During the first quarter of 1969, the 577th Engineer Battalion conducted Rome Plow land clearing operations along Highway LTL-7B from Tuy Hoa to Cheo Reo in Phu Yen Province, RVN. D Company, 16th Armor, provided security for the engineers and was the principal combat element to support the Phu Yen Provincial chiefs. They also furnished security at the Tuy Hoa North Airfield and acted as a Rapid Reaction Force. At 11:50 AM on March 2, 1969, an element from D/16th Armor was escorting a work party of 577th Engineers on LTL-7B when they were ambushed by an estimated seven to eight Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army soldiers. Automatic weapons fire hit one of the vehicles, killing the driver, engineer PFC Warren L. Beacham. A second engineer was also wounded. Beacham was posthumously promoted to Corporal.
