Final Mission of Capt Sam F. Beach Jr.

In 1967, the Cessna O-2A Skymaster was introduced as a replacement for the O-1 Bird Dog in the role of forward air control. The O-2A was a modified civilian Cessna 337 with an engine at each end of the fuselage. It carried more ordnance than the O-1, had more power, and was capable of longer loiter times. On January 17, 1968, a U.S. Air Force O-2A (#67-21327) from the 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron, took off from Khe Sanh Combat Base in Quang Tri Province, RVN. After liftoff, it was almost immediately hit by hostile groundfire, the Skymaster crashing just southeast of the runway. Third Marine Infantry Division personnel from B Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marines attempted to rescue the crew but were driven back by a post-crash fire and the live ordnance carried on the aircraft. Pilot Capt Sam F. Beach Jr. and Army observer SFC Donald L. Chaney from the 5th Special Forces Group were lost in the incident. do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

As long as you are remembered you will always be with us....
