Thank You

Dear FA Joseph Krywicki, Thank you for your service as a Fireman Apprentice. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. It is President’s Day. The time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Ground Casualty

FA Joseph G. Krywicki was a Fireman Apprentice serving with Task Force 115, Mobile Inshore Underseas Warfare Surveillance Unit 23 (MIUWS-23), Detachment 3 Qui Nhon, Inshore Undersea Warfare Group One (IUWG-1), U.S. Naval Forces Vietnam. On September 13, 1966, FA Krywicki was conducting watch in the early morning with two other Navy personnel in a tower at Post One at Qui Nhon naval base in Binh Dinh Province, RVN. Around 4:45 AM, Krywicki departed Post One to go to Post Two for a light for his cigarette. About 15 minutes later, he returned, climbed the ladder, and entered the doorway of the sentry box area. When Krywicki entered the doorway, two shots from an AR-15 rifle were fired at close range into his abdomen by one of the sentries. Mortally wounded, Krywicki fell back through the doorway. A corpsman was called, and the sailors struggled to bring Krywicki down from the tower (he was a large man) for medical evacuation. By the time the medivac helicopter landed, he had expired. An investigation into the incident resulted in charges of involuntary manslaughter and dereliction in performance of duty for the sentry who fired the shots. The outcome of the Special Court-Martial is not known. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and CID investigation documents]
