Final Mission of PFC William E. Browning

PFC William E. Browning was a Food Service Specialist serving with D Company, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. Throughout its service in Vietnam, the 4th Infantry Division conducted combat operations ranging from the western Central Highlands along the border between Cambodia and Vietnam to Qui Nhon on the South China Sea. In 1968, during Operation MacArthur, the division experienced intense combat against North Vietnamese Army regular forces while defending the provincial and district capitals that lay along National Highway QL-14, a paved road running north to south through the middle of the Central Highlands. On August 1, 1968, Browning was critically wounded in an engagement with the enemy approximately two miles northeast of the village of Xa Tho Thanh in Darlac Province, RVN. The injury left him a quadriplegic, and he was returned to the United States. Bedridden, he learned to use a voice-activated computer at home in Seffner, FL, where his family cared for him. Brown’s paralysis hastened his death, and he died at age fifty-six on May 6, 2000. Through the efforts of his niece, his name was added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in May 2005.
