Silver Star Medal Award
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Terry Don Baxter, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in Cambodia. First Lieutenant Baxter distinguished himself while serving as a Platoon Leader with Company D, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On 7 May 1970, near the eastern border of Cambodia, Lieutenant Baxter's six-man patrol began receiving intense hostile fire from an unknown size enemy force. Reacting immediately, Lieutenant Baxter effectively deployed his men and began maneuvering them against the enemy. Lieutenant Baxter repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy as he continually raked the enemy positions with a heavy barrage of fire. As he crawled toward an enemy emplacement, Lieutenant Baxter was mortally wounded. Through the skillful deployment of his men, Lieutenant Baxter enabled his patrol to rout the North Vietnamese force. The fleeing enemy were compelled to leave behind four dead and a huge cache of vital medical supplies. First Lieutenant Baxter's extreme courage, outstanding leadership, and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear 1LT Terry Don Baxter, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter
