Final Mission of LCPL Harold Bauchiero

On August 20, 1967, a U.S. Marines CH-46A helicopter (#152536) from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 164 (HMM 164) was attempting to insert a Marine reconnaissance team from the 3rd Recon Battalion at a location in Quang Tri Province, RVN, when it came under withering enemy heavy machine gun and small arms fire once on the ground. The aircraft received 16 hits, the barrage of bullets killing recon team radio operator LCPL Garry G. Tallent immediately. The crew chief and gunner on the ship were seriously wounded in the attack. The insertion was aborted, and the helicopter, trailing smoke, returned to Khe Sanh Combat Base. The two wounded crewmen were then medevacked to Phu Bai. The gunner, LCPL Harold Bauchiero, who had been hit by a 12.7mm round in the upper thigh, died enroute. [Taken from popasmoke.com]
