Alan, a real person, a big brother

Today is Memorial Day, 2024. As Alan's little brother, I'm touched by those of you who still remember him. This means much to me. Bucky Johnson changed his facebook profile picture today to info about Alan. Bill Wessinger has left nice posts here, and others of you, whose names I don't recognize, have likewise left comforting thoughts. Curious: is the Lucy below Lucy Maxwell? Have wondered about you. I think Alan was smitten. Does anyone know what became of Alan's friend, Frank Gilham? The pic below was taken the summer of his lifeguarding at Bon Clarken, not too long before Vietnam.

My friend

Allen was my good friend at Dreher High School in Columbia, SC. Allen was a friend to all. Not sure if I ever heard him say or do anything untoward anyone. Allen was killed just after I arrived in Vietnam but I did not know he died until I returned home in March of 69. He deserved better than what occurred as did all of those brave souls who were sacrificed for no good reason. I still think kindly of him on a regular basis. Rest peacefully Allen you are a hero. Rip

honoring you...

A butterfly lights beside us like a sunbeam
And for a brief moment its glory
and beauty belong to our world
But then it flies again
And though we wish it could have stayed...
We feel lucky to have seen it.
