Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC William Wayne Kent, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

my next door neighbor

I had forgotten your first name was William(if I even knew); I knew you as Wayne. Wayne, his brother James (we called him Peanut--I don't remember why), his mom and dad lived next door to me, my brother, my Mom and grandmother. I remember vividly the day I found out that Wayne had been killed. His dad was in the front yard and I asked him if he had received a letter from Wayne recently;he looked rather shocked and said, Didn't your hear Wayne was killed in Vietnam?" I was devestated not only for his family, but perhaps somewhat selfishly, for myself. you see, my fiance was in AIT training at Fort Hucahuca, Arizona. My fiance did go to Vietnam ain November, 1968, and praise to the Lord, he came home in November, 1969. We were married that December 5th. This December will celebrate our 36th anniversary. all these years later occasionally i think of that day and how I cried. I still cry for the brave men and boys who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy. I get so angry when I hear people say we lost the Vietnam War; we did not lose. Nixon and his advisors quit. We gave up. They caved into political pressure and the incessant media barrage of photos of our soldiers and the battle scenes. Yes, the loss of life was terrible and so costly, but war is costly. We could have defeated the Viet Cong and North vietnamese, But Nixon chose to quit. Wayne, we will not forget what you gave up for us.
