Two Spokane Men Die in Viet Nam
Two Spokane youths who last fall joined the Army and completed paratroop training in March were killed Thursday in combat in Viet Nam
They were Pfcs. Will P. Barton 2nd, 19, son of Air Force M. Sgt. and Mrs. Will P Barton, S4022 Sherman, and Joseph R. Ellman, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon A. Ellman, E3727 29th.
The Bartons were notified Friday and the Ellman's received word Saturday of the deaths of their sons. Whether the two members of the 101st Airborne Division, the "Screaming Eagles," were together when they were hit was not known.
Telegrams to the parents said that Barton died "of wounds, received when hit by automatic weapons fire while on combat operations against hostile forces" and that Ellman died "of gunshot wounds while on combat operations."
The two joined the Army together and were to have left at the same time for training, but Barton left in September and Ellman followed him two weeks later because a sprained ankle delayed him.
They trained at Ft. Ord CA and Ft. Gordon GA and by the time they graduated from jump school at Ft. Benning GA in March, Ellman had caught up with Barton.
Barton was born in Berkeley CA and had lived in Spokane since his family moved here in 1952. He attended Manito Kindergarten, Jefferson Grade School, Sacajawea Junior High School, and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School last June.
His survivors include a brother, John, 16 and a sister, Cynthia, 13, both at home...
