Ground Casualty

Hill 37 was a U.S. Marine Corps base camp located 25 kilometers (15 miles) due west of Hoi An in Quang Nam Province, RVN. During February 1971, the 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division was assigned to and occupy the USMC portion of Hill 37. Among the other tasks designated to 1/1 Marines were defending nearby Hill 65 and providing security for an observation post on Hill 270; also, they were to protect Marine engineers and Seabees at work on projects in the surrounding area and conduct daily mine sweeps on common access roads. On February 13th, PFC Neil S. Kendall, a 1/1 Marine from Headquarters & Service Company, was critically injured after he fell from an observation tower on Hill 37. Kendall was medically evacuated to the U.S. Army Hospital at Camp Zama near Tokyo, Japan, where he expired on March 3, 1971. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

honoring you...

War drew us from our homeland
In the sunlit springtime of our youth.
Those who did not come back alive remain
in perpetual springtime -- forever young --
And a part of them is with us always.

Thank You

Dear PFC Neil Kendall, Thank you for your service as an Antitank
Assaultman. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Thanksgiving is next week. The time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage, guidance and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Neil Scott Kendall, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
