Joe saved my life!
My life was spared in July 1966. Joe Kelley stood between me and flying shrapnels while trying to load our truck during a mortar attack while assigned to Battery C, 2d Battalion, 33d Artillery, 1st Infantry Division. The attack came from the village of Ap Bau Bang near Hwy 13 on July 30, 1966. I survived my injuries; however, Joe passed away three months later at the hospital in Camp Zama, Japan. Joe, you will remain close to my heart forever!

Joe was the last of his siblings to live at home. Because of this he was told he could have a hardship deferment, as his parents lived on a farm. He refused stating he wanted to serve his country. He was my mothers cousin, and two years older than me.
