You Are Not Forgotten
Gary, you have been a part of my life since April, 1967 when I arrived in Vietnam & was assigned to C-1-7, First Cavalry Division. I didn't know you long, but as infantrymen we formed friendships quickly. You & several others were like older brother to me, the new guy, & through your actions & conduct, showed me, regardless of my training, how to be a "real" infantryman. Thank you for that.
The day you died we were going down a trail & joking about what we were going to do when we finished our tour in Vietnam. We didn't realize that everything was going to change before the day was out. A few hours later you were dead and I, only a few yards from you, was unscathed. We got the wounded to safety & carried you to a chopper on a poncho. It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. I've carried the sad memory of that day with me ever since. I was nineteen then & I'm seventy six now. As long as I live you will not be forgotten.
I wish our acquaintance had not been so brief. Garry Owen, sir.
