WITH ALL MY LOVE

You came to life again for me on April 15, 1997 during a field trip to DC with a class of 6th graders I helped chaperone along with my son. I was determined to visit The Wall; such a long walk, but my group made it. A wonderful volunteer kindly retrieved a rubbing of your name and also a snapshot. This was a very quiet and solemn moment. I stood there and I could see you again the last time you came home; tall, dark and handsome in your Army uniform. I loved and admired you, Big Brother, because of your bravery, your love for us and especially since you were going back and promised to send me a bra. I was a little girl during your first tour but had become a blossoming teenager during your last visit home. I miss your teasing, how you would call me your "baby". All those fond memories came back, but the painful memory of receiving news of your ultimate sacrifice brought tears as I stood viewing your name. The children who were with me were very quiet as they were told by a veteran to give respect to the visitors (wives, children, mothers, fathers, siblings). One of my charges even had a grandfather whose name was on The Wall. The reality of it all just struck hard as my eyes scanned the entire length of The Wall - why did so many have to die ? My brother, the success I've obtained in life is mainly due to my reflections of you being proud of me. My beloved brother, you have a nephew who reminds me so much of you. I'm raising him alone, but I'm teaching him the meaning of being a "real man" just like you. You wanted to make something of yourself and had you been here today, I know you would be playing an important part in his life. He knows about you and from the things I told him, he admires you. You were my hero, you still are. As I write this remembrance, I see you, I'm running to you and you are picking me up, calling me your baby, and I'm hugging you, full of laughter. One day we will meet again and this time the reunion will be beautiful. This time, you won't leave me because peace will be on the entire earth. Until that day, you will always be in my thoughts. I never forgot you, William. I thank God for being your little sister and even though we didn't have much time together, what little time we had was always wonderful. I love you, my handsome black knight, and I'll be waiting again for my piggy back ride.

With all my love, your little sister, Vita.
