Dear Captain Joseph Jones, Thank you for your service as an Infantry Unit Commander. Saying thank you isn't enough, but it is from the heart. Yesterday, we are celebrated Columbus Day. The time passes quickly. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

CPT Joseph B. Jones was an infantry unit commander serving as the leader of D Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry, 11th Infantry Brigade, Americal Division. On February 5, 1968, CPT Jones was leading 1st Platoon, D Company, on a cordon and search operation in a broad valley in the vicinity of Duc Pho, Quang Ngai Province, RVN, when a single sniper round fatally injured him. His men were so enraged that there was reportedly a small breakdown in command and control when they began burning a couple of hooches where the fire appeared to come from, and resulting in most of the village being burned down in response to the loss of their commanding officer.
