For SSGT. David Lawrence JONES, USA...another of Pittsburgh's bravest of heroes, who gave his all!!!
He loved us so.
Every day, in a hundred ways, he told us so.
In honesty, in affection, he told us so.
He loved us so. so.
Every day, in a hundred wauys, he showed us so.
With loyalty and bravery, he showed us so.
He was our defender, and he kept us free!
He took an oath to guard us, and fought for liberty!
He loved us so, and we should know.
For we loved him so.
Sergeant Jones, you gave the last full measure of devotion to your country. You were one brave man who did brave deeds for America!
You lost your life when your NDP (night defensive position) was overrun by the NVA, despite your best efforts, but you valiantly tried to save your buddies' lives! You gave all that mortality can give! Your name and fame are the birthright of EVERY American citizen! You had brought honor to Pittsburgh, the home of HEROES BRAVE AND TRUE!...a city where three rivers meet...and the HOME OF THE BUCS AND THE STEELERS! You fought for the right, without question or pause! And you lived up to the code of conduct and chivalry of those who guard this beloved land...an ideal SO NOBLE that it arouses a sense of pride, and yet, of humility! I believe that Jill Corey, whom Avonmore (her home town) and Pittsburgh (where she got her start) can claim as one of their own, and whom I admire so greatly as one of my three top favorite, fabulous songbirds of all time, the others being Julie Andrews, who is from England, and
the late Dusty Springfield. who was also from England, but she passed on some years before, would be very proud of your service to America, and ther sacrifices that you had made to protect our land, to keep our country free! Well done, Sergeant! Be thou at peace. ARMY STRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brothers Forever
From a 101st airborne 2502nd trooper: March 21, 1970 we had our first major engagement. On that day we lost Stephen A. Golsh and John T. Gutekunst. Our lives were now changed forever. On April 30, 1970 while clearing a red ball, Donnie Horton flopped back to rest and landed on an anti-tank mine. I can remember that there was little left to put in the body bag. He was the LT's RTO man and a fun guy. Then on May 5, 1970 we walked into an NVA ambush, Ivory Lee McKinney and you faced the initial on-slaught and prevented us from receiving worse casualties. You tried to assist Ivory and lost your life in the process. Ee all like to think we would have acted the same, but YOU DID. Your fellow soldiers know what you did and will honor you till our passing days. On May 8, 1970 we lost Peter F. Nolan and Wayne K. Smith. On the early morning hours of May 16, 1970 our NDP was over-run and we lost David L. Christopherson, David L. Jones, John R. Mariani and Billy Ray McCullough. Of the original 42 men, by the end of May only 2 remained in the field.

Vow fulfilled
I'll never forget that day in May 1970 when I helped carry your body to the helicopter, we were on Hill 882 and it finally had a break in the rain and fog so air support could resupply us and medivack out the KIA's and WIA's. As the chopper lifted off I vowed to say my good-by in the real world. On November 10, 2011 with the help of Carol Haberchak and my wife, I found your burial site. Once again you hold the high ground. You were a great friend and soldier, till we meet again.
Your 101st Comrade.
Your 101st Comrade.

Putting A Name With A Face
David, your friend and compatriot, Hank Trickey, was kind enough to provide a photo of you from your NCO Yearbook and it is my pleasure to be able to upload it to your profile. It is with great pride and humility that I post this remembrance and I do so to honor you and your memory and the sacrifice you made for your country. You are not forgotten and remain in many hearts all these years later. You have been designated to be one of God's special angels, along with the love of my life, who also sacrificed his life during this war. We were from the same city, Pittsburgh, but did not know each other. We do have a close tie--your life was ended on my beloved father's birthday May 16 and 11 years later he also was to join you in God's band of Angels. God Bless You David for being who you were and all you did--we live in freedom to this day thanks to heroes like you.
