Never Forgotten
FOREVER REMEMBERED
"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you....and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.....Be not ashamed to say you loved them....
Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own....And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind...."
Quote from a letter home by Maj. Michael Davis O'Donnell
KIA 24 March 1970. Distinguished Flying Cross: Shot down and Killed while attempting to rescue 8 fellow soldiers surrounded by attacking enemy forces.
We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you, one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam:
Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul ... and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.

Hi Padre! I just talked with Jack and thought I would visit with you.
Just think, over thirty three years, in some ways just the blink of an eye and in many other ways... life times away. I just talked with Jack. A real great guy. I know if Jack knew he was going to die in Nam, he would have prefered to die in battle. I have met guys who were in the bush with him and they said he was a real grunt; the best. I agree. I always knew you were ready to die, I mean a priest and all; but I didn't think death would find you in Nam. Did you? That's right, you died daily with Christ. I hope you are with Him and Jack with the both of you. Do you know how pained everyone was when you guys went down? What a shock. Charlie N was devistated. I wonder if he ever got over it. And Fr.Bruno the Bear - I wonder where he is now. That big guy cried like a baby and cussed like a marine when he heard you went down with Jack. I often wonder about Jack's bride to be. Boy was he in love. War? I wonder if anyone, not having experienced the battle, even knows what we carry every day of our lives. The memory of you guys is a big part of that load. Take care, I'll come back if you like... ok I'll be back. Scoat the Scout
