In greatest thanks and praise,
My everlasting thanks for your noble and benevolent service,
I truly praise you Mr. Barnhart. Because of souls such as yourself, our nation is today free and proud. You answered the call of duty. You answered when your nation needed you most. And you selflessly gave her the epitome of sacrifice when you laid down your body in the forests of Quang Tri when the time came. You were the first to leave this world and set an example for the entire Marine corps and America. We shall never be able to repay you, but your name is forever engraved in our hearts. I have never met you, but I pray that one day I shall see you in God’s realm where you undoubtedly reside today. One can only aspire to attain your bravery and passion. May we all gain strength and confidence from your example. I give you my greatest adoration and respect.
Thank you Sir.

It could have been me.
I did not serve in Viet Nam. My number was higher than was selected that year in the draft. But the war has always had a lot of meaning for me. So when I took my kids to the wall in 1991 my heart was heavy as we looked at the names. When I saw the name of Earl Barnhart as one of the first names on the wall I cried. My name is LeRoy Earl Barnhart.
