“Butch” to our family
“Butch,” to our family, I only got to experience the forever change in them in your absence. The eldest of seven children, you were grandma and grandpa’s pride and joy. Forever in their hearts and memories. My dad had made a makeshift shadow box on cardboard with your insignia and printed statistical and unit information on it. It survived the house fire in 1980, and I’d occasionally ask Grandma to show it to me, as she kept it tucked away in her dresser. I “rubbed” your spot at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial as one of my first stops when stationed in DC in 1997 and presented it to the family in a frame that hung under your new shadow box I’d made for them the year before. In 1999, I had the privilege of washing your section of the wall as a project in leadership school. In 2002, I again had the privilege to honor your spot, this time by posting the colors as an honor guard for the traveling wall in Winchester, Tennessee. I wish I could have grown up in your presence. Gotten to bond with you. Perhaps across the Jordan on the other shore, we will meet some day.

Do Not Stand at my Grave and Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
As long as you are remembered you will never die....
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
As long as you are remembered you will never die....
