Final Mission of SFC William E. Jackson

Sergeant First Class William Eugene Jackson was the son of John W. and Elizabeth A. Jackson and had deep roots in the Rochester, Michigan area. His great-grandfather established the Jackson Foundry at the sound end of Rochester in 1877. SFC Jackson graduated Rochester High School in 1946 and joined the US Army soon after. Prior to Vietnam, he served as a radio instructor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. SFC Jackson was serving as a Special Forces qualified Infantry Operations and Intelligence Specialist assigned to Detachment A-732 (Tra My), C Company, 7th Special Forces Group, U.S. Army Special Forces Vietnam, MAAGV. On January 19, 1964, at the Tra My SF camp in the vicinity of Hau Duc, RVN, he was assisting a Vietnamese army unit in combat against the Viet Cong to the northwest of their compound. When a flare dropped in front of SFC Jackson, he was mistakenly shot by a Vietnamese soldier with an M-2 carbine rifle. SFC Jackson was wounded in the left thigh and leg. He was evacuated to Clark Air Force base in the Philippines where he succumbed to his wounds on February 5, 1964. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and rochesteravonhistory.blogspot.com]
