Remembering An American Hero
Dear SSGT Gerald Richard Hwang, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, Sir
Curt Carter

Weeping in the Garage
I came home from school one day in May 1969 to the sound of someone in the garage crying. In the corner was my father weeping quietly. He had just received word that our once family neighbor was KIA in Vietnam. SSG Gerald Hwang, nicknamed "Bimbo" by his family, was my next door neighbor from Palo Alto. Bimbo always had a smile on his face and let me help him deliver the Palo Alto Times, our local paper. He had an older brother and his sister Tina, later became a PomPon girl at Stanford. He was the first and closest person that I knew who died in Veitnam. On this Memorial Day 2016, I honor his memory and that of my father, SSG Kenneth A. Murray, 1265th Combat Engineers, European Theater, WW II.
