Attack on FSB Berchtesgaden - June 14, 1969

Firebase Berchtesgaden (also known as Firebase Eagle's Nest or Hill 1030) was a U.S. Army firebase located west of Hue overlooking the A Shau Valley in Thua Thien Province, RVN. At 4:30 AM on June 14, 1969, troopers of the 3rd Brigade, U.S. 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile) at FSB Berchtesgaden were attacked by 30 to 50 North Vietnamese soldiers employing small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire as well as satchel charges. The troopers defended with unit weapons and were supported by U.S. Navy A-7 jet attack aircraft from the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), Army helicopter gunships, and a USAF AC-47 Spooky gunships. Thirty-one enemy were killed, one crew-served weapon was captured, and two enemy, who were captured during the fight while penetrating the outer defensive perimeter, were detained. U.S. casualties were twelve killed and 46 wounded. The lost Americans included SP4 Bobby R. Brown, CPL Michael J. Dodge, SP4 Paul S. Goc Jr., CPL Cutburt Hurtault, SP4 Louis J. Kelly, SP4 Armando A. Minor, SP4 Malcom E. Mitchell, SGT David T. Sitton, CPT Robert M. Snell, SP4 Ruben Urdialez, PFC Johnny Wiles, and PFC David A. Worrell.
