Bravery and Honor
I forget if it was you, Richard. I think it was you, the RTO for Bravo Company. As the company medic, I was asked to go into a hot landing zone alone to evacuate a wounded Lt. Since I refused to carry a weapon, you stepped forward and offered me your M16. I declined. Later that day, I had to medevac you, and I've always wondered ... if I'd taken the weapon you offered to me, you might have been in a different spot at the moment you were wounded. I'd only been with the company command post 2 days, and hardly knew you, but I remember you.
I've had to go back and piece the day together by date and location, so I'm not sure I have the right name. Above the Rao Lao River, right on the Laotian border, on a hill just opposite Dong Ap Bia. RIP.

Remembering An American Hero
Dear PFC Richard Lewis Hupp Jr, sir
As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.
May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.
With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir
Curt Carter
