Ground Casualty

On January 30, 1968, Khe Sanh Combat Base in Quang Tri Province, RVN, was struck by enemy rocket and mortar fire, resulting in the deaths of four U.S. Marines. LCPL Timothy M. Barmmer, a Radio Telegraph Operator with B Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, was reportedly sitting with several other men out in front of their bunker late in the afternoon while it was still daylight when an enemy round exploded nearby. Barmmer was critically injured in the blast, losing a foot and suffering multiple fragmentation wounds over his body. He was put on a stretcher and taken over to the aid station where he later expired. While the attack was underway, SGT Jesus R. Vasquez, an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, rushed to the ammunition supply point on base after several rounds landed there, igniting a stack of ammunition. SGT Vasquez was helping fight the fire of the burning munitions when he observed an 81mm mortar round ablaze. Aware of the proximity of his comrades and the possibility of detonation, Vasquez lifted the round in an attempt to throw it into a deep crater where its lethal effects would be absorbed should it detonate. In his attempt to throw the round, it exploded, mortally wounding him. He was awarded the Navy Cross for his actions. 1LT Robert J. Mariz, an Administrative Officer with Headquarters Company, 26th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, suffered fatal fragmentation wounds during the barrage. And LCPL James K. McCann, a rifleman from B Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, was also critically wounded during the bombardment. He was medivacked to the U.S. Navy hospital ship USS Repose where he died February 3, 1968. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org, khesanh.org, and SGT Vazquez’ Navy Cross citation]
