Remembering An American Hero

Dear PFC Chester Stacy Hughes, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter

How I died.

No one can answer why I died, but I can tell you how I died. It was a nice sunny day I was on patrol in an area we had been a dozen times before. As we moved across the hill to take up our position for the day I headed toward a shady spot. As I walked into the group of trees I felt something on my boot, I look down to see the pin of the gernade being pull by the wire.

In a flash I'm in a state of shock, my buddy Doug is the first one to my side, he along with the corpsman work to cover the holes in my body, but there are to many, the blood can not be stopped. I'm not in any pain, the shock takes care of this. I know I'm dieing and there is nothing I can do. I think of all the things I would like to do before I die but I wouldn't be able to. Doug stay's by my side, he try to reassure me that I'll be ok, but I know better. I lay in the moring sun for about 20 minutes before my medivac arrives, I almost gone by now, the blood lost has been great. I can't see or hear Doug, things are losing focus, I'm going, up, up, in the medivac, I close my eyes and say good bye to my family and ask myself why
