Misadventure (Friendly fire)
SP4 Ronald C. Hudson was an infantryman serving with B Company, 5th Battalion, 12th Infantry, 199th Infantry Brigade. On the late afternoon of September 12, 1969, B Company was conducting combat operations in Long Khanh Province, RVN, following a combat assault into an area near Xuan Loc. Operating in platoon-sized units, Hudson’s group was maneuvering single-file through the woods when they walked into a small Viet Cong (VC) encampment. An exchange of gunfire with enemy combatants occurred, and the platoon pulled back into a semi-circle facing the camp. Fire support was requested, and a single UH-1 gunship came on station and attacked the enemy positions. During one of its runs at the enemy, Hudson was hit and critically wounded in the head. A medivac was requested and arrived after dark. Each time the aircraft lowered a litter (rescue basket), enemy fire would drive the helicopter away. About this time Hudson expired, and the medivac dropped a body bag and flew off. The platoon pulled back and waited to recover Hudson’s remains the following morning. His 6’2”, 220 lb. body was placed in the remains pouch, and with extraordinary effort, was carried for two days by his platoon. Throughout the time they moved through the woods, they were harassed by a VC sniper as they struggled with their fallen comrade. The sniper eventually wounded a sergeant who was medivacked. Hudson was finally picked up after being placed on a transport helicopter during a resupply. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and information provided by Anthony M. Baxter (July 2021)]
