Attack on Bearcat Base - February 24, 1969

Bearcat Base was a U.S. Army base near the city of Bien Hoa in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. The supply system at the base was performed by the Bearcat Logistical Support Activity (LSA). The LSA provided direct support maintenance, rations, petroleum, oil and lubricants (POL), clothing and equipment, vehicles, maintenance support of all equipment, self-service supply, and direct exchange services to U.S. and Free World Military Assistance Forces (FWMAF) based at Bearcat. Additionally, the Bearcat LSA provided graves registration support and laundry and bath support to U.S. and FWMAF located in the Long Khanh Province Blackhorse support area. Shortly before 10:00 AM on February 24, 1969, Bearcat received three enemy 107mm rockets in the LSA area; it was hit again at 12:10 PM by an unknown-type high explosive round. One American, SGT Michael N. Hubert, a Petroleum Supply Specialist from 1011th Service & Supply Company, was killed in the attack. Three others were wounded. One of the wounded, SP5 Sammy E. Kinnamon, a supplyman also from the 1011th, succumbed to his injuries on February 26, 1969. Hubert was posthumously promoted to Staff Sergeant. Material damage from the barrage included one jeep, two M16 rifles, three flak jackets, and a protective mask destroyed. Remembering An American Hero

Dear SSGT Michael Neil Hubert, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
