Final Mission of SP5 James J. Howard

The U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division deployed to Vietnam in September 1965, taking up positions in III Corps (Military Region III). On November 1st, during Operation Big Red, division troops and supplies were still being transported to field locations when a M35 2-½-ton cargo truck in a convoy hit a land mine on National Route QL-13 nine kilometers (5.4 miles) southeast of Ben Cat in Binh Duong Province, RVN. The blast killed four 2/28th Infantry personnel. They included medic SP5 James J. Howard (HHC-2/28), mortarman PFC Wayne A. Balmer (C-2/28), infantryman 1SG David R. Dickens (C-2/28), and platoon sergeant PSG Gordon S. Huggins (C-2/28). [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org and “Combat Operations: Stemming the Tide, May 1965 to October 1966” by John M. Carland]

We Will Remember

I had the honor to say your name during the 40th anniversary commemoration of the Wall. May you rest in peace.

"They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
