Remembering An American Hero

Dear SSGT Alan Roger Hosnedle, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, Sir

Curt Carter

Remembering my friend ~

Alan...You will always be loved and missed. A very nice person indeed, and a wonderful classmate, band member, and friend you were to me and all of your classmates at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn, MI. I will never forget the day I found your obituary in the Dearborn Press. What shock, how empty I felt, and not believing how young you were to go so soon. I have thought about you over and over again all of these years since your passing. You will always be remembered for how kind and gentle you were. Much love and respect to you!! You will always be missed and today, July 4th, 2012,I thank you for fighting for, and defending our Country and our freedom in America, and making the ultimate sacrifice. Much Love, Pat~

Alan Hosnedle was born in July of 1945 to Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Hosnedle. The family, which included his sister Gail, lived on Olmstead. Alan attended Edsel Ford High School, where he was a star swimmer. He was a member of the Varsity Club, and graduated from Edsel in 1963.

After graduation, Alan attended Michigan State University where he studied premed. After his father became ill in 1965, Alan returned to Dearborn to run the family business. Shortly after he left Michigan State, he was drafted.

He entered into the Army in 1967, and did his Basic Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He was then sent to Fort McLellan, Alamba for Advanced Infantry Training. A noncommissioned officer, he was further trained at Fort Benning, Georgia before being sent to Vietnam in July of 1968.

While in Vietnam, he was assigned to D Company, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry, 196th Brigade of the Americal Division. He served as a Sergeant in the Infantry. He was killed on March 12, 1969. He was 23 years old.

For his actions in Vietnam, Alan Hosnedle was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. His Bronze Star commendation reads in part “Sgt Hosnedle distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions.” After his death, he was promoted to Staff Sergeant. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.
