Ground Casualty
SP5 Joseph L. Hopkins Jr. was a Watercraft Operator serving with the 544th Transportation Company, 159th Transportation Battalion, 4th Transportation Command, Army Support Command Saigon, 1st Logistical Command, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. The 4th Transportation Command maintained a fleet of seagoing vessels and ground transportation vehicles to move supplies, goods, and equipment for Army units operating in Military Region III. Occasionally, their vessels visited other ports outside the region to deliver or receive cargo. On the early morning of October 2, 1968, Hopkins’ body was found floating in the waters of the South China Sea at an LST Loading Ramp at Qui Nhon Port in Binh Dinh Province (Military Region II). An Army investigation into the incident determined that he fell from a boat and drowned while intoxicated with alcohol. Hopkins was 23 years old. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
