I FIRST MET 1ST SGT BARBER WHEN HE WAS STATIONED IN LAFAYETTE INDIANA AS A RECRUITER.I WAS ON THE FENCE ABOUT ENLISTING IN THE MARINE CORPS UNTIL ONE DAY I RECEIVED MY DRAFT NOTICE FOR THE ARMY.I WENT DOWN TO THE MARINE RECRUITERS OFFICE AND SAID FRANTICALLY TO 1ST SGT BARBER CAN YOU SAVE ME FROM THE ARMY? HE SAID SURE...I ASKED IF HE HAD ANYMORE TWO YR ENLISTMENTS AND HE SAID "NO,ONLY 3 OR 4"...I SAID I'LL SIGN UP FOR 3 IF YOU CAN PROMISE ME ONE THING..."HE SAID WHATS THAT?" I SAID PROMISE ME I WILL GO TO VIETNAM...SGT BARBER CHUCKLED AND SAID" SON THATS A PROMISE I CAN KEEP"....I WAS SENT TO VIETNAM WHERE I RAN INTO SGT BARBER AND WE HAD A NICE BRIEF VISIT.HE ASKED IF I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO THE BUSH AND I SAID NO NOT WITH THE ENGINEER UNIT I WAS WITH...HE SAID ILL ARRANGE FOR YOU TO GO WITH ME...I WOULD FOLLOW THIS MARINE TO HANOI WITH A BUTTER KNIFE....TWO DAYS LATER WE GOT HIT BY 122MM ROCKETS AND I GOT TO HIS AREA AS HE WAS EVACUATED WITH MORTAL WOUNDS...HE WAS TRULY A MARINES MARINE AND HE IS MISSED.
