Thank you for your service to our country so long ago sir. The remembrances from your niece and "friend" are especially poignant. As long as you are remembered you will always be with us.

Final Mission of LCPL Ernest M. Barber

LCPL Ernest M. Barber was an Antitank Assaultman serving with M Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines. On August 27, 1970, LCPL Barber was on a squad-sized patrol with his unit two miles southwest of Que Son in Quang Nam Province, RVN. While walking down a trail, a booby-trapped M26 grenade was detonated. Barber suffered fatal injuries in the blast, and another Marine was wounded and evacuated. The booby-trap was reportedly two feet off the trail with a trip wire tied to a tree on the other side. The Marines on the patrol were wearing flak jackets and helmets and spaced approximately 10 yards apart. A search of the immediate area resulted in negative findings.
