Ground Casualty

On September 5, 1967, a jeep from C Company, 2nd Battalion, 34th Armor, 25th Infantry Division was traveling on Highway QL-1, approximately seven miles southeast of Duc Pho in Quang Ngai Province, RVN, when it hit a land mine near Bridge 103. The explosion, which left a crater in the ground four feet deep and eight feet wide, was caused by a pressure detonated-type device. It completely destroyed the vehicle and killed its three passengers, including C Company’s commander, CPT William E. Hocker. The other lost personnel were SSG Dieter H. Burger and SP4 David A. Schultz. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]

Remembering An American Hero

Dear Captain William Eddie Hocker, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
