Ground Casualty

Special Forces Detachment B-36 (3rd Mobile Strike Force Command) was located at a camp located on Road TL-44 in Long Hai, forty-seven miles southwest of Vung Tau in Phuoc Tuy Province, RVN. The 3rd Mobile Strike Force consisted of more than two thousand men, mostly Cambodian and Chinese Nung indigenous soldiers led by U.S. Special Forces personnel. The unit included three light infantry battalions, a reconnaissance company, and a headquarters company. They conducted tactical and strategic reconnaissance in the III Corps Tactical Zone. On November 10, 1968, the B-36 Special Forces camp at Long Hai came under an enemy mortar attack. Many of the indigenous soldiers were killed, including one of their American advisors, 1LT Eugene D. Hill. Several others were wounded, including SFC George W. Coone Jr. Coone was evacuated to a hospital where he died the following day. Hill was posthumously promoted to Captain. Remembering An American Hero

Dear Captain Eugene Donald Hill, sir

As an American, I would like to thank you for your service and for your sacrifice made on behalf of our wonderful country. The youth of today could gain much by learning of heroes such as yourself, men and women whose courage and heart can never be questioned.

May God allow you to read this, and may He allow me to someday shake your hand when I get to Heaven to personally thank you. May he also allow my father to find you and shake your hand now to say thank you; for America, and for those who love you.

With respect, and the best salute a civilian can muster for you, Sir

Curt Carter
