a really NICE guy but headhunter all the way
I went to the 219th in aug, 68, and served with them for the next year,1st in the 4th Platoon, then the 2nd in kontum. Cpt. Long summed up Lynn very well he had the sunniest disposition, was the nicest guy and was a tiger in combat. I still miss him and Tom most every day. In order to survive mentally, you had to be a little mean and tough. Tom was the epitome of mean in combat and Lynn wasn't far behind, but he was basically the nicest guy I knew in that year. he was the right combination of nice and mean, but no pollyanna! Miss you, Lynn.

Goodbye to a Headhunter
Memorial Day, May 31, 1999
Goodbye to a Headhunter...I served in the 219th Aviation Unit (Headhunters) in Pleiku, Vietnam with Lt. Lynn Higley and Capt. Tom Shafer. The day the two of you were shot down I was on the radio back at HQ trying to get help. After 30 years of rememberance, the pain, the sorrow, and the futility of your deaths feels almost as fresh today as the day you died. You, Lynn, and you Tom will be with me for the rest of my life. I have never forotten you, nor will I ever forget you. You were two really great guys, good friends, and great Headhunters, who will be remembered each time I see, hear, or feel anythng that reminds me of Vietnam.

Lynn Higley; a 22 year old Headhunter forever.
Lynn Higley was a good friend, flight school classmate and fellow Headhunter. We went to Viet Nam together and were sent to the 219th Headhunters. I was flying for SOG out of Kontum when I heard he was shot down and the war was not the same for me thereafter. It became much more personal and I became meaner and more aggressive. I have thought about Higley a thousand times in the last 30 years and cherish his memory. He was always so cheerful but was a tiger in the face of the enemy. I wish I could trade places with him so that he could enjoy life as I have. He was the best. It's a shame.
