He died too young

Roger worked the motor pool and was to go to Hong Kong with me on R&R to celebrate our birthday on October 22, but he didn't make it. He was married and had a child he never got to hold. I still miss him and pray for him daily. I hope someday to tell his child how good a person Hickey was.

Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial at Santa Maria High School

SP4 Roger A. Hickok and ten other Santa Maria High School graduates have been memorialized in a display case located in the administration building at Santa Maria High School in Santa Maria, CA. Their images were placed there decades ago and have recently been moved to a main corridor in a new exhibit. This exhibit includes rubbings of their names from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. in addition to the names of 18 others who lost their lives in Vietnam. This newly located display will remind students, staff, and other passersby each day of the tremendous sacrifice these young men made for their country.

The men of the 84th Engineer Battalion honor your sacrifice.

He gave his life helping his brothers. He will live forever in the hearts and minds of his fellow soldiers. We will honor his memory until we meet again at the final roll call.

God Bless You

I am writing this remembrance as part of a class project in Gridley High School. However, personally, I am writing it in honor of Roger. I do not know Roger, but I know what he did. He paid the ultimate sacrifice and laid down his life for our country. I believe that every name on this wall is worthy of recognition for that very reason. God bless you my fellow citizen for your selfless and courageous act for our country. Your life has helped to shape our nation. Thank You. You will be forever remembered.
