Gary was a gift from God
Gary dated my sister before entering the Marines and wanted to become engaged before he left for boot camp. Gary was one of the sweetest people I have ever met. He always made you feel special when you were with him and gave you his undivided attention when you spoke to him. Unfortunately, my sister was not prepared to have a serious relationship with Gary and wrote to him to tell him she wanted her "freedom". Shortly after she did this, we received notice that Gary had been killed after volunteering for a "suicide" mission. His parents were devastated and I couldn't believe for a long time that his young life had been snuffed out. That happened a long time ago but I still have a hard time dealing with the fact that my sister's letter might have had some bearing in his taking that extremely dangerous mission. She showed no remorse for her actions and it was not until many years later that I found out what she had done.
I will always treasure the short time I knew Gary and feel blessed to have known such a special man. I have been carrying this around with me for a very long time and hope that if anyone reads this it might help to understand why he did what he did.
I will never forget his kindness and pray for him and his family that they may find peace and know that Gary is with the Lord and that he gave his life so that others may live freely. May God always bless his family. And, Gary, I haven't forgotten you and I never will.
