I Remember (then) Major Hestle

Colonel (then Major) Hestle was an instructor pilot of mine at Nellis during the latter half of 1965. I was sent to Takhli, Thailand for my first assignment—the first pilot to go directly from training into combat. A few months later, a number of my F-105 instructors was sent to Korat and I sometimes recognized their voices on the radio. In August 1966, I was shot down and became a POW myself. Long after repatriation, I found out from the Nationa League of POW/MIA families that his (now) Colonel Hestle's remains had been returned and I wanted to attend the ceremony at Arlington but I was not notified of it until it was over. I very much wanted to meet Constance again.

I TOO WORE HIS POW/MIA BRACELET IN 1972

I've kept this bracelet all this time and recently googled his name. Listed in the information was the phone number of his daughter Corda. I'm so glad to have phoned her, her story of his blessed life warmed my heart today. He was truly a special, brave man. It sounds like his family is carrying on his peaceful beliefs. He and I also share a birthday. I will leave this bracelet with our local VFW Hall where they keep a table set for those POW/MIA comrades.

I Wore His POW/MIA Bracelet

My sincerest condolences to the family on this loss. There may be some comfort in knowing the final disposition. Thank you to those working tirelessly to bring closure and final peace to those lost in service. As a teenage girl in the mid 1970s I was one of many who wore an engraved silver-colored POW/MIA bracelet. Mine was engraved with Lt. Col. Roosevelt Hestle. While he had already passed by then, his family wasn't aware of my additional prayers being sent up for a definitive conclusion and peace for everyone involved. I don't believe I have the bracelet any longer, but I have the memories of wearing it and thinking often of him. God bless... Laurel
