Ground Casualty

An Hoa Combat Base was a U.S. Marine Corps and Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) base in Quang Nam Province, RVN. The base was located approximately seventeen miles west of Hoi An and two miles west northwest of the My Son temple complex near to the Tinh Yen River. On December 21, 1968, a fire in the MAG-16 Tactical Fuel Distribution Squadron (TAFDS) area fatally injured two Marines. SGT Kent D. Pierce and CPL Jimmy C Hester, fuel specialists serving with Marine Airbase Squadron 16 (MABS-16), Marine Aircraft Group 16 (MAG-16), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW), were critically burned after fuel spilled from a line on a pump engine ignited. A crash crew responded and extinguished the fire with 400 gallons of water, 10 gallons of foam, and 90 lbs. of the dry-chemical fire suppression agent PKP. Both Pierce and Hester were evacuated to the U.S. Army Burn Center at the 106th General Hospital in Yokohama, Japan. Hester died December 24th; Pierce succumbed on the 27th. Thank You

Dear Cpl Jimmy Hester, Thank you for your service as a Bulk Fuel Specialist. Yesterday was Memorial Day when we honor you. I could not post because the system was overwhelmed. Please watch over the USA, it still needs your courage. Rest in peace with the angels.
