Silver Star Citation
Walter Maurice Henry
Silver Star
AWARDED FOR ACTIONS
DURING Vietnam War
Service: Marine Corps
Rank: Private First Class
Battalion: 1st Military Police Battalion
Division: 3d Marine Amphibious Force
GENERAL ORDERS:
CITATION:
The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Walter Maurice Henry (MCSN: 2388813), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Rifleman with Company D, First Military Police Battalion, Force Logistic Command, THIRD Marine Amphibious Force, in connection with operations against insurgent communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. On 23 August 1968, Private First Class Henry's unit was occupying a defensive position near the Cam Le Bridge, south of DaNang, when the area came under intense mortar and small arms fire. Learning that several Marines on the opposite side of the river were wounded and required medical evacuation, he unhesitatingly boarded a multi-purpose barge and, accompanied by three companions, maneuvered the craft across the river. Arriving in the designated area, he quickly realized that suppressive fire would be necessary to cover the evacuation of the casualties. Fearlessly rushing across seventy-five meters of fire-swept terrain, he reached a friendly unit and directed the deliver of suppressive fire at the enemy positions. Completely disregarding his own safety, he then attempted to return to his wounded comrades in order to assist in their evacuation and was mortally wounded. Due largely to his heroic and determined efforts, his injured companions were safely evacuated from the hazardous area. By his courage, resolute determination and selfless devotion to duty, Private First Class Henry inspired all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
