Ground Casualty

SP4 Kenneth W. Hendrix was an Armor Crewman serving with D Company, 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. The 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment was a mechanized infantry unit which conducted reconnaissance, surveillance, and security missions. Arriving in Vietnam in September 1966, it utilized armored personnel carriers and medium tanks and could attack or defend either mounted or dismounted. Hendrix joined the unit in April 1970. On October 20th, during his sixth month in Vietnam, he went on sick call and was seen at the Battalion Aid Station at LZ Kate in Long Khanh Province, RVN. Critically ill, he was transported to the 93rd Evacuation Hospital at Long Binh where he was admitted at 6:00 PM suffering from the effects of leptospirosis. Despite intensive antibiotic therapy to save his life, Hendrix expired six days later from cerebral hemorrhage, staph infection, and septicemia (blood poisoning). He was 20 years old. Leptospirosis is a blood infection caused by the bacteria Leptospira. Humans become infected through contact with water or moist soil that contains urine from infected animals.
