POW/MIA BRACELET DISPLAY - PALM SPRINGS AIR MUSEUM
I am the Curator of the POW/MIA Bracelet Display in the Vietnam Hangar of the Palm Springs Air Museum in Palm Springs, California where we now have more than two thousand bracelets honoring POWs, MIAs and KIAs and would be honored to include your bracelet in our Display should you have one. If you no longer have your bracelet or wish to keep yours or are an immediate family member (spouse, fiancé, sibling, child, grandchild, cousin, niece, nephew, or close friend) I can order one for the Display in your name with funds donated by our Museum visitors. Thank You for Remembering My Friend
Barry Hempel was a church friend of mine during our high school years in Garden Grove California. He had a wonderful sense of humor and smile. Thank you Veterans Memorial Rangers for making me a rubbing of his name when I visited the memorial in April. I think of Barry and his family often. His death was a horrible thing for those of us in the church youth group. He graduated in 1965 and died in 1968. Much too young.

Summary of Service
On 10 May 1968, a detachment of one officer an 43 artillerymen from Battery D, 2nd Battalion, 13th Marines, at Ngok Tavak, five miles south of Kham Duc, was attacked by surrounding elements of the 2nd North Vietnamese Division. Having expended all artillery ammunition in a fierce defense, the Marines disabled their two 105 mm. howitzers and escaped from the camp with Vietnamese irregular troops under Australian command. Thirteen Marine artillerymen and one Marine aviator were killed in the action.

I learned of you as a child
My mom and uncle lived across the street from Barry as teens and I was told of his service as a child. My mother recalls that PFC Hemple’s mom did not believ he was KIA and his status to her remained MIA for many years. It was t until the past few years that I looked into things and realized that his remains had been found and identified. My husband is a combat wounded warrior who served as a greenside corpsman. During his time in service, he spent time in Vietnam recovering remains of our fallen service members and it is good to know that families like PFC Hemple’s were given the closure they deserved. Thank you for your service.
