An Angel in Heaven and a Friend for life.
Johnny, I met you long ago at your parents home in Anderson, Iowa and again at my Grandparents home at Sidney where you came to spend the day with my cousin and your cousin Dan Hein.
I am thankful our paths crossed back in the 1950s as you have introduced me to one of the dearest friends, your sister Lee. Lee and I have lead parallel lives up to a couple years ago when we got reconnected. Part of the connection was through you. Thank you.
You were a good cousin to my cousins the Hein kids, children of your and mine Uncle Chris and with Auntie Ruth. These cousins have paid tribute to you every Memorial day and have raised your name in praises of you friendship with them.
I have gone to Washington D.C. several times and visited Arlington Cemetery and have viewed the Wall where your name is in the enormous stone. Your name is there paying tribute to what you sacrificed, your life. Thank you Johnny for your service to our country and thank you for being part of my life too. God Bless you forever and your memory will be in my heart as well as all the other family members you have left behind. Thank you, Sheri Hayes-Olson

Never Forgotten
FOREVER REMEMBERED
"If you are able, save for them a place inside of you....and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go.....Be not ashamed to say you loved them....
Take what they have left and what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own....And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind...."
Quote from a letter home by Maj. Michael Davis O'Donnell
KIA 24 March 1970. Distinguished Flying Cross: Shot down and Killed while attempting to rescue 8 fellow soldiers surrounded by attacking enemy forces.
We Nam Brothers pause to give a backward glance, and post this remembrance to you, one of the gentle heroes lost to the War in Vietnam:
Slip off that pack. Set it down by the crooked trail. Drop your steel pot alongside. Shed those magazine-ladened bandoliers away from your sweat-soaked shirt. Lay that silent weapon down and step out of the heat. Feel the soothing cool breeze right down to your soul ... and rest forever in the shade of our love, brother.
