He was the BEST

In February of 1969 I was Corporal Heim's Platoon Commander, Lima Company Third Battalion Fourth Marines Third Marine Division. Cpl. Heim was on his second tour as I recall and I had served with him for approx. two months before his death. He was killed walking at the front of his squad when we were ambushed going to the assistance of our Third Platoon which was being decimated by automatic weapons fire. Cpl Heim was the finest Squad leader I had the honor to serve with in Vietnam and I often think of him with his green kerchief around his neck and the words " habu" stenciled on his flak jacket. Our Platoon took a terrible blow when Cpl Heim died as many , including myself, thought him to be indestructible.I was fortunate to return after 12 months in Vietnam in reasonably sound body and mind, but I will always be accompanied by the memories of this exceptional Marine and exceptional person.
