Ground Casualty
SSG Thomas F. Heffernan was an infantryman serving with the 547th Map Depot Platoon, 66th Engineer Company (Topographic) (Corps), 18th Engineer Brigade, U.S. Army Republic of Vietnam. The 66th Engineer Company (Topographic) was stationed with Headquarters, U.S. Army Vietnam at Long Binh Post, 20 kilometers (12 miles) northeast of Saigon in Bien Hoa Province, RVN. The company produced and provided maps and topographic intelligence in support of combat operations in the III and IV Corps Tactical Zones. On January 11, 1966, Heffernan was on sick call for an unreported illness. Around noon, he was being transported by jeep for an examination at the U.S. Army’s 3rd Field Hospital in Saigon when he reportedly fell from the vehicle near Tan Son Nhut Airbase. Heffernan struck his head, sustaining a skull fracture and hematoma of the brain. He died shortly after. Heffernan, 34, was a fourteen-year Army veteran. He left a wife and seven children.
