Childhood friend
Growing up in West Monroe, LA, I lived down the street from Bobby and attended grammar and high school with him. Bobby was a quiet, shy boy with a slow grin. He was kind, not the sort to tease girls or pull their pigtails. I'd finished college and was living in NYC when Bobby was serving in Vietnam. On a visit to D.C. in the early 80's, shortly after Maya Lin's miraculous monument to our fallen in Vietnam was dedicated, I found his name there, traced it with my fingertips, and mourned this sweet boy, his life wasted in a needless conflict. We must do better. The world must do better. Life is too short and too precious.
