I remember you and keep you in my prayers

I remember the day that he was killed in our battery - he was a much-liked member of our gun sections. The on the day he died, he got all of his possessions - his expensive camera, his stereo system, and other things - and began smashing them with a hammer while he cried. We tried to find out why he was doing this and even tried to offer him money for his stuff, but he wouldn't listen and kept smashing. Later that evening, he was on outpost in our battery perimeter and he was involved in a gunfight with two new guys we just got in the battery and he was killed and one of the two new guys was wounded. He never told us what was going on or we would have handled those two that apparently harassed him. He was a great guy and we would have always taken his side, if only he had let us know what was about to happen. His loss affected all of us, all the more because he didn't die because of the VC; He died because of a different kind of enemy. We pray for you, Hayes and we will always remember you.
