Thank You

Dear PFC Paul Haydon,
Thank you for your service as a Combat Engineer. It is Easter week and Passover. The war was years ago, but we all need to acknowledge the sacrifices of those like you who answered our nation's call. Please watch over America, it stills needs your strength, courage and faithfulness. Rest in peace with the angels.

Ground Casualty

PFC Paul D. Haydon and SP4 Samuel J. Izzard were Combat Engineers serving with D Company, 19th Engineer Battalion. On March 8, 1969, PFC Haydon and SP4 Izzard were directing traffic around a work crew at culvert 115 on Highway QL-1, northwest of Duc Pho in Quang Ngai Province, RVN. A Vietnamese civilian approached on a motorcycle who the two engineers flagged down in order to let other vehicles pass. The motorcyclist then struck an estimated 25-30 pound pressure-type mine. Haydon and Izzard were fatally injured in the blast. The Vietnamese motorcyclist was also killed. The remains of the two engineers were taken to Duc Pho. On March 10, 1969, a memorial service was conducted for the two fallen Americans at the 19th Engineer Battalion base at LZ Thunder. [Taken from coffeltdatabase.org]
