Ground Casualty

SF3 Arthur W. Ball was a shipfitter serving on the gasoline tanker USS Genesee (AOG-8). At 2316 hours on April 22, 1968, the Genesee began receiving enemy mortar fire while at anchor in the mouth of the Cua Viet River in Quang Tri Province, RVN. SF3 Ball was hit by shell fragments while on a damage control party investigation during the attack. He was medivacked to the hospital ship USS Sanctuary with a shrapnel wound to his lower abdomen on the left side. Ball succumbed to his wounds the following day.
